Golegã is a small Portuguese municipality known
around the world for the annual horse festival it has held every year since 1571.
The fair is the most important event for the admirers of the Lusitano horse.
In 2010, my father talked me into making a collaborative photographic
project with him about the fair. I was not disappointed.
The town seemed stuck in the 1800s. The tradition
was so strong, the city so vibrant, the people so enthralled by a culture that survived the ordeal of time
against all expectations that it could only lead me to fascination.
We decided to try to capture the beauty of these people, to whom riding
a horse means everything and who try to keep the tradition and its
authenticity alive. Sons and fathers were riding along in their traditional costumes, while most
of the cars had deserted the city. A year later, the photographs were published in a book and in 2013, they
were exhibited at the Conrad Algarve in partnership with the ArtCatto gallery.
